Relic Stupa of the Licchavis

Here the Licchavis reverentially encased one of the eight portions of Lord Buddha relics, which they received after the Mahaparinirvana.

Beneath the stupa a stone casket containing Relics of Lord Buddha was found. Here band of monkeys offered a bowl of honey to the Blessed One.

 This pillar is different from the earlier Ashokan pillars because it has only one lion capital. The lion faces north, the direction Lord Buddha took on his last voyage.
